Anza Borrego in the light of the Full Moon
Such a treat, we can’t wait to go back to this quiet spot. This was a spot that I’ve been trying to get to since we first arrived in San Diego back in in May. I wanted to go for the stars more than the cacti, but I knew that both would be wonderful.
We stayed in Borrego State park, as I somehow miraculously was able to score 3 nights there (I am sort of falling in love with cancellations that pop up). This was another quiet stay, the only time we left the campground was too do some hikes, and those trailhead were right in the campground itself. The first hike was the Panorama Overlook. Sadly both Amelia and I chickened out at the climbing switchbacks 1/2 way through, but the boys made it up to the summit. They could see the camper below, but we couldn’t find them
The second was the Borrego Palm Canyon. This was a much better hike for the whole family. This was actually one of my favorite hikes - there was a change in the terrain, and some parts that were tricky and just challenging enough, but not too hard. At the end, after walking in the desert heat for a couple of miles we were rewarded with a legit Oasis, palm trees and all, in the middle of the canyon.
Most of all we just loved the slow days or stunning nights here. Add this to the list of dark sky parks I visited during a full moon. But I was able to practice my moonlit landscapes and watch the phenomenal moon climb over the surrounding mountains. The boys had lots of space to play ball together, and we built fires each night.
And then we left. And we climbed Montezuma’s Pass in Big Dan. And this was one of the roads that tested our marriage, haha.
