Heading West... 2 days at a time
Often when traveling we have a long span between stops, so we have to break up our trip with an overnight somewhere. And every once and awhile we can make this overnight stop coincide with a short visit with friends who we don’t normally get to see. On our way up to Maine we had a stop over in New Hampshire and had our wonderful friends Amanda and Matt bring their camper van and co-camp with us. We loved the adult interaction, the kids loved catching a toad, putting on a music performance, and riding their bikes around.
Upon leaving Maine, we were very keen to get moving West for good reason. Winter was coming and Big Dan — as well as Desiree — doesn’t like the cold. We would soon deal with the cold but that is another story 2,000 miles West. So for about 2 weeks we drove a day, landed for one or two days, and then drove again. Our eventually landing spot was down in Virginia but we enjoyed the trip.
Since we were on the move, we used Boondockers Welcome to find some overnight spots. Boondocking means “free” and Aaron loves “free”.
The first spot was in some back hills in Massachusetts. 20 miles of curvy small roads designed by horses a century earlier to land on someone’s property for an overnight stay.
The second spot was in Fultonville, NY at Humming Bird Hills Winery. Again, getting to it was 20 miles of curvy road with low trees everywhere. Yep, Aaron loves “free” but these roads take 6 months off his life. During the day, Aaron worked and Desiree took the kids to see some old Brooklyn friends — Nikki, Charles, and Anika. Anika was Amelia’s BFF in kindergarten and they still get along famously. She also tolerates Wade.
After that, it was off to Niagara Falls to see Molly, Adam, Mina, and Ferris. Desiree took the kids to see the falls. You can read Amelia and Wade’s write up below.
