Big Skies and Wine in Iowa

Big Skies and Wine in Iowa

Our stay in Iowa was brief but memorable. We stayed two nights parked at a vineyard. That’s right, that’s what I said, a vineyard in Iowa! This was our first time booking a stay through Hipcamp, which is basically an air b&b for motor homes/trailers. The first impression was a great one, we had this amazing spot perched high atop a hill (10 feet shorter than the highest spot in all of Iowa), with nothing to see but these amazing skies and miles and miles and miles of corn. I mean….these skies were unforgettably wide and wispy. At the end of each night we were gifted with some of the most beautiful sunsets I’ve ever seen.

We only stayed two nights, and one afternoon, while Aaron worked, I took the children to visit with a friend I haven’t seen in years. We had a picnic lunch outside at a charming botanical garden, then walked around the small town center for a bit. I dare say it was a bit “normal” feeling, visiting with an old friend, even though there were still many precautions taken for COVID’s sake (most disappointingly, the avoidance of a dip in the lake due to a very crowded beach).

Our host was so gracious. He let the kids feed the cows while the grown ups did some wine tasting and they loved the very friendly barn cat. The excitement of the whole stay was probably the catching of the giant toad - Amelia does not shy away from picking up any animal that is slow enough to be caught.
