Nature provided many amazing gifts in Ohio
It was only a few months ago that we decided that this would be our path through the pandemic, isolating ourselves in a motorhome and traveling through the country experiencing as much of the natural beauty we can squeeze in. We quickly purchased our National Park passport books and began collecting junior ranger badges (I’m a collector at heart). Being new to this specific “collection” I didn’t realize that there are only a handful of national parks on the east coast, one of them being nestled right in Ohio, Cuyahoga National Park.
It was just the kids and I, Aaron was back at the motorhome workin’. When we arrived at the tent set up outside the visitor center the ranger we spoke to set us on the right path. He recommended the Ledges Trail, and encouraged the kids to scamper all over the rock outcroppings. On our hike we discussed the geological difference in the rocks - you could easily see the difference between the bedrock, the shale, and the Sharon Conglomerate, all formed during different periods in the earth’s history. the kids cared more about the mating millipedes and daddy longs legs to be found everywhere. That and climbing as high as they could get.
We stayed the Akron KOA and it was one of our favorite stays. The park was clean and since it was mid-week it was nearly empty. We were able enjoy the huge pool all to ourselves, and got to hunker down during some intense thunderstorms. A particularly spectacular thunderstorm ended with this gorgeous rainbow, and it was as if my children had never seen a rainbow before. Sheer joy.
