Western Ho!
How many total days does it take to pack up a family for a cross country trip in the middle of a pandemic?
10 days
10 days to get our heads around the idea.
10 days of getting a car ready with a complete fluid replace and new hitch.
10 days of ordering all the essentials like a car roof cargo carrier and hitch cargo carrier. 10 days of planning food.
10 days of planning the drive.
10 days of talking with everyone and getting everyone's opinion.
Why stay in Brooklyn when the sunshine and warmth of San Diego were only 40 hours away?
With the kids, food, clothes, and a Subaru full of favorite items; we headed west!
We were able to make the trip in just 4 days of driving. We stayed at air b&bs, because we could arrive and go in and wipe everything down with wipes. We brought in our own sleeping bags and pillows as well - doing everything we could to stay safe. We stayed in Indiana, then hopped onto route 66. Then we stayed in Oklahoma and Arizona before arriving into San Diego.
I had never seen the flat land of the west, nor the true deserts of Arizona and California. We saw so many impossibly long trains, and earmarked so many places to return to once it was safe.
The kids were also so good during these 40 hours in the car. They had books and games and music. I gave them the equivalent of feed bags for the day, so they were in charge of making their food last all day, and not pestering me for a snack every hour. The really impressed us.
